How your diet can effect your health
So I made the switch and felt better for it. I didn’t have one of these epiphanies like some reckon they have, but then I also ate relatively healthily before giving up the meat so it wasn’t a big adjustment for me.
Then I began to realise how important nutrition is to prevent and treat disease. Do you know that 70% of the diseases that plague us today are “lifestyle diseases”? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to reduce the rate of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis and some cancers just with better food choices? This was my epiphany---suddenly I wanted to help others to eat better. Now you may have read the section that says I am a pharmacist, so I rely on dispensing prescription drugs for my living. I would like nothing better than to not have to dispense all the drugs to manage hypertension, diabetes, angina, heart failure and osteoporosis, yes and potentially do myself out of a job! By the start of the new millennium, my main interest was with those who have diabetes. It happened when I realised that type 2 diabetes is largely preventable if people went back to basics with their choices of food. This seemed so logical and simple to me.
Since then I have, in many different ways been involved in helping folk explore healthier lifestyles. And so here I am again, in partnership with Sally, who can help even a well experienced couch potato find some exercise that they can fit into their day. Together we can get you thinking about ways to reduce your risk of developing these lifestyle diseases.
I hear many folk make comments such as “well I have to die of something”...it’s true as that is the one thing we all have in common. BUT you can improve the quality of your life and death by taking care of the one and only body that you were given. You will have heard people say “he died of a sudden heart attack”, in other words he had no symptoms and the first symptom was death. There is no such thing as a sudden heart attack, they all take years of planning and preparation!
I promise our aim is not to turn you into a vegetarian. Our aim is present you with the facts of how our diet is killing us or at least preventing us from living life to the optimum. Then we will show you how to make the changes that you choose to make. Your life is in your hands....
I look forward to seeing you in Kelso!
